You might like to ask yourself:
What is the function of this behaviour?
What does it serve?
You might also like to ask:
How did it arrive?
And what keeps it going now?
Then you might like to ask:
How much do I really want to give it up?
Am I giving it up because I want to – or because someone is asking me to?
Your therapist might then ask you:
How much work are you willing to put in to stop it?
How uncomfortable are you prepared to feel?
Compulsions require work
The work will cause discomfort
The result of giving it up is anxiety and distress
So what are you prepared to do?
